SHINE BRIGHT

Be the light for our mental health community.

CMHA-VF Fall Campaign | October 15, 2023 – January 31 2024

Given the increased COVID-19-related mental health stress on students, school-community mental health programs are now, more than ever, essential to the health and well-being of our young people.

When it comes to mental illness, youth is a critical period: most people living with a mental illness see their symptoms begin before age 18. (Mental Health Commission).

Our goal is to increase the capacity of youth to develop and maintain good mental health through education and early intervention.

1. Here4Peers is a peer-based mental health literacy program for students. It is an inclusive and accessible program facilitated by high school students for students in grades 6 and 7. Reaching over 3,000 students in Vancouver, it is now time for students in Surrey and Richmond to have access to the program.

Your donation will ensure that high school students learn facilitation skills and mental health literacy to take to younger students. Let’s Talk Mental Health for Kids and Teens.

2. Urban Resilience Opportunities for Kids (UROK) provides monthly activity based programs for youth who are living with a parent with mental illness. Kids learn coping and resilience building skills while socializing with others who experience similar mental health challenges. Due to the physical proximity restrictions of COVID, only 50% of the kids were able to participate in the program.

Your donation will be directed to the lease of an additional van and hiring of two recreational therapists to ensure that every participant has equal access to the program.

3. Mental Wellbeing for Chinese Seniors program improves the lives of individuals in the Chinese community by increasing awareness of mental health issues, promoting wellness through recreational and leisure activities and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.  The program is run by volunteers, managed by a part time program coordinator.

Your donation will be directed to the hiring of a part time administrator to meet the increased demand for on line and on site programming for Chinese Seniors.

4. Resilient Minds™: Building the psychological strength of fire fighters. Our fire fighters are seeking strategies to manage the intense, daily stress of their job and to mitigate trauma and boost resilience. Resilient Minds™ is an evidence-informed, peer-to-peer, skill-building program designed by and for career and volunteer fire fighters.

Your donation will support the adaptation of Resilient Minds for front line health workers so paramedics will have access to this peer-based mental health program.
